This section is only about 8 miles but most made a 2  mile diversion to visit Lanercost Priory – only to find it closed.  Fortunately the tea room was open.

The walk now began to feel more like an upland walk with fine views south to the Pennines and the Lake District.

And the Roman Wall was much more evident.

We paused to view (and sup at) the Birdoswald Roman Fort.
