The first day was 14.5 miles through mostly flat countryside. The route follows the southern bank of the Solway Firth to begin to Port Carlisle, Glasson and Burgh and then the River Eden to Carlisle.
Mostly the terrain consisted of minor roads, tracks and undulating field paths lined with flowering hawthorn and hedge parsley .
It was a reasonably gentle start but a long one.
So we were quite footsore by the time we reached Carlisle.
